Regarding yesterday’s post...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
A few bumps along the way. My Z170 Deluxe motherboard decided to kill itself. Tried multiple PSUs, processors, ASUS Q Code says 00. So it’s toast. Got a replacement MSI Z270-A Pro. Works fine except the onboard sound is not working. Using audio via
DisplayPort for now.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
So after assembly it now looks like this
Retrobrighted the case and painted a 5.25" USB 3.0 front panel ...
slightly off but it’s hard to find exact matching spray paints.
Dell Optiplex GX110 case
Corsair 750W power supply (cheapest name-brand power supply I found at
microcenter at the time)
MSI Z270-A Pro ATX motherboard
32GB DDR4 3200 RAM (2x16GB)
MSI Armor RADEON RX580 8GB PCIe video card
Teac beige DVDRW drive
5.25 USB 3.0 front panel
Samsung 970 EVO 512GB NVMe SSD
Seagate 2TB 7200RPM HD
Windows 10
Left it in the sun a bit too long, some slight streaking is noticeable but only if you really look up close.
My motherboard’s I/O shield is unfortunately missing... but did keep the original Dell PCI brackets.
The guts! Tidied up the wires in the 5.25 drive bays.
Lower part of the machine... the front panel is proprietary and was a pain to wire up. I don’t have the HD LED working but everything else works fine (power LED, power + reset buttons).
That floppy drive is not hooked up to anything.
Here it sits in all its glory!

Precision: didn’t you advise me on a Precision workstation purchase a year ago or so? Do you have any experience with the Precision laptop?
I’m using a Latitude Core i5 that is proving inadequate for my needs. It looks like the Precision has two HDD slots, which would be very handy.
What would be the minimum processor/model number you’d recommend?
I shot a bunch of photos in RAW and they’re 25mb each, and they take like to the count of 8 to load from an SSD! Not up to the task.

Get one with M.2 2280 and a 2.5 bay at least. Any of the 15" precision's with 8th gen i7 (not the U processors) would suffice. Look on Dell business outlet to save money

Thanks. If it's coming from Dell, it's going to be too much money. My budget is more like eBay.

eh... look for any M4800
i7 4700MQ or higher with 16GB RAM and FHD screen, buy your own drives. will be significantly less

Thank you. Buying my own drives was my inclination anyhow. I'd buy a 256 SSD + 1tb standard drive for data.

What do you think of this one? Looks like dude selling his lappy, rather than some bloke turning around a heap of off-lease units.

great price... do it! actually i’d do it ASAP before someone else does!
and replace the optical drive with this
and toss in a 500GB or 1TB drive or whatever in there instead. much more useful

Do those have a second Bay normally or would it require this conversion?
Is that going to have any USB 3.0?

it will have USB 3.0 and you’ll need that caddy to toss in a 2nd 2.5" drive. I believe it has an mSATA slot though

I received the Precision notebook in the mail today. Thing is immaculate. And fast . Kind of big and heavy, though I knew it would be. Twice any laptop I’ve ever laid hands on. Thanks for helping me pick it out.
